Remediation Services for Medical Cyclotron Transportation | |

Rowe Transfer has a long-standing history of safe and efficient transportation of medical equipment which produces radioactive material. We receive numerous requests to remove, relocate, and/or decommissioning of residually radioactive medical equipment throughout the United States and beyond.

One of the most challenging equipment transfers Rowe faces is the decommissioning, disassembly, and transportation of cyclotrons. Cyclotrons are used in particle or proton therapy used to battle cancer and work by forming ion beams which penetrate the body and kill tumors using radiation, while at the same time avoiding excessive damage to healthy tissues.

Because of the complexity and safety issues involved with moving cyclotrons and similar equipment, Rowe Transfer has teamed with Ameriphysics to provide first-rate cyclotron remediation services for hospitals, labs, doctors’ offices, and other medical facilities. As a result of our remarkable relationship with this world-class company, we not only guarantee responsible and safe disassembly, removal, and relocation of cyclotrons but also ensure proper decontamination and remediation of the removal site and decommissioning of the cyclotrons, which includes disassembly and waste disposal.

Cyclotron Transportation

Cyclotrons utilize enormous magnets to create their electrical and magnetic fields They are extremely heavy and require advanced preparation, planning, and manpower. Since residually radioactive materials are encased in cyclotrons, the machines are located in a concrete vault which protects surrounding areas from exposure to radiation. Because of this, the first step in moving these machines is to create an opening in the concrete vault large enough to facilitate the removal of the cyclotron. Sometimes the enclosing rooms for these machines have a special plug built in, and if not an opening is cut out of the concrete. Transportation companies then utilize various rigging techniques in order to open a cyclotron vault.

Once an opening is created, the medical equipment must then be safely packaged or crated in order to prevent damage while being moved. Once ready for transportation, Rowe utilizes cranes, industrial forklifts, and other specialized rigging devices in order to relocate the medical device to one of our trucks. Rowe Transfer, in partnership with Ameriphysics, also performs all DOT surveys, manifests, and documentation necessary to comply with the laws surrounding the safe transportation of hazardous materials.

Cyclotron Installation

While Rowe Transfer and Ameriphyics handle many cases of end-of-life transportation for cyclotrons and other residually radioactive medical equipment, we also often engage on the installation of cyclotrons.  As you can probably imagine, there is an enormous amount of considerations and analysis that goes into installing a cyclotron. Our unique experience with radioactive protection allows us to consult with administrators who are planning a new cyclotron facility on everything from cyclotron facility design, equipment and personnel preparation, procedure development, licensure, audits, and quality management based on best practices laid out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and other governing bodies.

Environmental Remediation

Environmental remediation involves removing pollution, contaminants, or radioactive materials from surfaces. Not only does this type of work surround removal of the contaminants from an office or facility, but also involves the proper disposal of hazardous materials. Environmental remediation and medical device transportation organizations must effectively plan their work around limiting public exposure to residual radiation not only while moving the medical equipment, but also after disposal. Due to this consideration, remediation work is extremely meticulous and involved and requires the proper training and knowledge to ensure that the public is safe.

Thanks to our partnership with Ameriphysics, Rowe Transfer is proud to offer complete cyclotron relocation services, from start to finish.

Medical Equipment Transportation

From radiology diagnostics to nuclear medicine and radiation therapy, radiation has become a mainstay in certain areas of medicine today. Because of Rowe Transfer’s unique capabilities in cyclotron remediation, decommissioning, dismantling, and transportation, we’re the logical choice to perform your next transportation job. Our drivers are OSHA trained, hold TWIC cards, and possess the driver’s license classes necessary to haul hazardous and non-hazardous materials.
